Maintaining Healthy School EnvironmentsMantener Ambientes Escolares Saludables

East Aurora School District 131 is committed to maintaining the healthiest school environments possible during the Coronavirus Pandemic. In order to ensure that your children and all staff are safe at school, the following procedures will be followed in order to prevent the spreading of germs between students:

Social Distancing

To the greatest extent possible, all school buildings in East Aurora will develop classroom layouts that allow at least 6 feet of physical distance between students.

  • Desks will be turned to face in the same direction (rather than facing each other), or have students sit on only one side of tables, spaced apart.
  • Your child will have an assigned seat and teachers will develop a marked path of travel within the classroom in order to maintain social distancing from entry into the classroom.
  • Visual posters showing 6 feet of distance will be placed throughout all school buildings.
  • Markers will be placed on the floor to show your children how far 6 feet is for all common areas of the building.
  • Hallways will be marked with tape and converted for a one-way traffic flow whenever possible in order to promote social distancing of students during passing periods.
  • The number of people in hallways will be limited to the greatest extent possible.
  • Lockers for both middle and high school students will be prohibited until further notice.
  • Staff and students should abstain from physical contact, including, but not limited to, handshakes, high fives, hugs, etc.

Handwashing

Students are encouraged to wash their hands frequently throughout the day in order to prevent the spreading of germs. In order to make sure all students are washing their hands properly; we encourage the five steps that you see outlined below from the CDC. Practice these steps with your child at home:

Follow Five Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way

Washing your hands is easy, and it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Follow these five steps every time.

  1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
  2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
  3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
  4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
  5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

When to Wash Hands

  • After blowing one’s nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • After using the restroom.
  • Before eating or preparing food.
  • After contact with animals or pets.
  • Before and after providing routine care for another person who needs assistance such as a child.

Hand Sanitizer in Classrooms

Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs in most situations.  However, there will also be hand sanitizer available in all classrooms for students to use throughout the school day.  Students may use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.

Sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of germs on hands in many situations. However,

  • Sanitizers do not get rid of all types of germs.
  • Hand sanitizers may not be as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy.
  • Hand sanitizers might not remove harmful chemicals from hands like pesticides and heavy metals.

Follow Three Steps to Use Hand Sanitizer the Right Way

  1. Apply the gel product to the palm of one hand (read the label to learn the correct amount).
  2. Rub your hands together.
  3. Rub the gel over all the surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry. This should take around 20 seconds.

Short videos from the CDC that show proper handwashing:

Use of Shared Objects

Use of shared objects (e.g., gym or physical education equipment, art supplies, toys, games) will be limited whenever possible, or cleaned between use.  Typically, classrooms in our elementary schools have communal supplies that are shared between students.  However, due to the spread of germs that may occur when supplies are shared, we will be eliminating the use of shared supplies this school year.

  • Your child’s belongings will be separated from others’ and in individually labeled containers, cubbies, or areas.
  • East Aurora School District will ensure adequate supplies to minimize sharing of high touch materials to the greatest extent possible (e.g., assigning each student their own art supplies, equipment) or limit use of supplies and equipment by one group of children at a time and clean and disinfect between use.
  • Teachers will encourage students to avoid sharing electronic devices, toys, books, and other games or learning aids.

Ventilation

The CDC recommends increased circulation of outdoor air as much as possible, for example by opening windows and doors. To the greatest extent possible, individual school buildings will follow these guidelines so long as weather permits us to do so.

Water Fountains

In order to prevent the spread of germs, water fountains will be discontinued this school year until further notice. Disposable water bottles will be provided to our students to ensure the highest level of safety during the school day. We ask that you please do not send your child with a water bottle to school, as it will be difficult to determine what is inside each water bottle for a student that is bringing one from home.

Cafeterias/Food Service

Meals will be provided to all students each day of the week, no matter if your child is physically attending school that day or remotely learning from home. Individual schools will send out schedules with door numbers indicated for food pick-up for the days that your child is remotely learning from home. See the Appendix of Important Documents in this document, for meal-pick up locations and times.

  • When in school, meals will be consumed in classrooms to ensure the least number of students in one space.
  • Students will be required to sit in their assigned seats during breakfast and lunch in order to maintain social distancing in the classroom.
  • Meals will be individually plated. Buffets and any sort of “shared” food will be prohibited.
  • All classrooms will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected prior to beginning instruction again.
  • Hand hygiene for all students must be practiced both before and after each meal that is held in the classroom.

Recess (Elementary Students)

Students will have recess each day they are in school, but will not be permitted to play on playground equipment during recess time. We are committed to your child’s safety and well-being, and we are taking every precaution to stop the spreading of germs between students. Students are not required to wear face coverings outside so long as social distancing in maintained.

Field Trips

Live field trips will be prohibited this year until further notice. Your child may engage in a virtual field trip with his/her classmates in order to maintain social distancing and to provide the safest learning experience for all students. Examples of wonderful virtual field trips include the Seattle Aquarium, the San Diego Zoo, Yellowstone National Park, and the Boston Children’s Museum.

Google Maps also offers a wide array of guided virtual field trip experiences. Visit our list of virtual field trips to view opportunities.

Extracurricular Activities

Please note that extracurricular activities will be limited this year until further notice.  There will be a strict application process for any third party to provide extracurricular activities to students.  In order to prevent the spread of germs, third party after school providers must follow the IDPH requirements for social distancing, appropriate use of PPE, limiting the number of students we have in one space, and cleaning and disinfecting any frequently touched surfaces.

Physical Education, Gymnasiums and Locker Rooms

Physical activity can support your child’s overall health and well-being, and it may help reduce stress and anxiety.  This year, physical education will take place remotely at home in order to provide the safest learning environment for your child.

  • The use of locker rooms and changing of clothes is prohibited until further notice.
  • Any sort of physical contact between students is prohibited in order to prevent the spreading of germs.
  • The use of any shared gym equipment is not recommended.

Driver’s Education Behind-the-Wheel Instruction (High School Students)

There are specific safety guidelines set forth by the Secretary of State in conjunction with the IDPH for delivering behind-the-wheel training for high school students.  We understand that many of our high school students are eager to learn how to drive.  The following procedures will be followed when working with your children behind the wheel:

  • Allow only two students and one instructor per vehicle.
  • Face coverings must be worn, unless medically contraindicated.
  • Eating and drinking inside the vehicle is not permitted.
  • Complete hand hygiene with either soap and water or hand sanitizer both before and after driving. Hand sanitizer will be placed in each vehicle for your student.
  • Between each session, the steering wheel, door handles, seat belt fastener, controls/dials that the driver would touch, keys, car seats, etc., must be cleaned and disinfected.

Music-Related Courses

In addition to physical education, music courses will also be taught remotely this school year in order to provide the safest learning environment for your child.

  • Musical instruments may not be shared between students at any time.
  • Long term rentals are permitted, however, instruments should be properly cleaned and sanitized between rentals.
  • Virtual learning opportunities for music-related courses will be provided whenever possible.

Napping/Rest Time (Early Childhood Students)

All naptime mats and cots will be at least 6 feet apart as much as possible.  Placing children head to toe will be considered in order to reduce the potential for a virus to spread.  Bedding will be labeled for each child, and thoroughly cleaned and disinfected after each use.

Cleaning and Disinfecting Surfaces

Your child’s safety and wellness will be our main priority when school opens this fall. In order to stop the spread of germs, there will be specific cleaning and disinfecting procedures implemented this fall when schools reopen. We will be following these guidelines when cleaning and disinfecting your child’s school:

  • If surfaces are dirty, they will be cleaned using a detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection.
  • Employees will follow the manufacturer’s instructions for all cleaning and disinfection products for concentration, application method and contact time, etc.
  • Frequently touched surfaces (e.g., door handles, sink handles) within the
school and on school buses will be cleaned at least daily or between use as much as possible.
  • There will be a schedule for increased, routine cleaning and disinfection, particularly after any food consumption for breakfast and/or lunch time meals.
  • Cleaning products will not be used near children, and staff will ensure that there is adequate ventilation when using these products to prevent children or themselves from inhaling toxic fumes.
