Resilience Education Center Celebrates Grand OpeningEl Centro Educativo de Resiliencia Celebra Su Gran Inauguración

On March 20, 2024, East Aurora School District 131 celebrated the completion of the Resilience Education Center (R.E.C.), a state-of the art learning facility to promote student and family well-being through mental health services, social wellness and college & career readiness through industry-level course offerings. Many community members gathered for the Ribbon Cutting and were able to tour the new center. 

Located at 417 Fifth Street, Aurora, IL., the Resilience Education Center project has been underway since 2022, with Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Norrell and the Board of Education leading the charge.

“We celebrate the resilience of our students and families following the global pandemic. This center is a concerted effort to extend their capacity to be resilient and insure that our students are equipped with the strategies and skills to build a strong future being both socially well and academically prepared for greatness,” shared EASD 131 Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Norrell. “My vision was to create a space for our students focused on embedded wellness while each of our schools continues to foster academic acceleration. This space was born out of conversations with middle and high school students answering the ultimate question, what activities would make you put down your cell phone? Students gave very specific answers and that is what we built.”

High School Juniors and Seniors will have the opportunity to participate in advanced industry-level electives in art, music, broadcast journalism, dance, yoga, gaming, coding and culinary arts daily at the R.E.C. After school, 7th through 10th graders will have the opportunity to attend the R.E.C. for activities hosted by staff and other community partners. “Private individual and group counseling will also be available for students who are referred to such services, situating the space as one which nurture both the social and emotional development of students–a true safe space,” added Dr. Norrell.

At the R.E.C. you’ll find:
• Private Group and Individual Counseling Rooms
• 2-D & 3-D Art Rooms
• Music Production Studio
• E-Sports Center
• Dance & Yoga Studio
• Broadcast Television News Recording Studio (students will be able to produce broadcast newscasts live from here with industry-level camera equipment, an anchor desk, and more)
• Podcast Studio
• Culinary Arts Kitchen
• Café/Coffee Bar and more!

“There will be parent workshops and programs for families with children of all ages during the weekend. This will give us the opportunity to increase parent engagement and at the same time unite families in the educational journey,” said Mariza Martinez, Assistant Director, Resilience Education Center. “We’re grateful that our students and their families will be able to experience something so unique and inspirational in our very own East Aurora community!”

El 20 de marzo de 2024, East Aurora School District 131 celebró la finalización del Centro de Educación para la Resiliencia (R.E.C.), una instalación de aprendizaje con lo último en tecnología para promover el bienestar de los estudiantes y sus familias a través de servicios de salud mental, bienestar social y preparación para la universidad y las profesiones a través de cursos a nivel industrial. Muchos miembros de la comunidad se reunieron para el corte de cinta y pudieron recorrer el nuevo centro.

Ubicado en 417 Fifth Street, Aurora, IL., el proyecto del Resilience Education Center ha estado en marcha desde 2022, con la Superintendente Dra. Jennifer Norrell y la Junta de Educación como encargados.

“Celebramos la resiliencia de nuestros estudiantes y familias luego de la pandemia global. Este centro es un esfuerzo concertado para ampliar su capacidad de ser resilientes y asegurar que nuestros estudiantes estén equipados con las estrategias y habilidades para construir un futuro sólido, estando socialmente bien y académicamente preparados para grandes cosas”, compartió la Dra. Jennifer Norrell, superintendente de EASD 131. “Mi visión era crear un espacio para nuestros estudiantes enfocado en el bienestar integrado mientras cada una de nuestras escuelas continúa fomentando la aceleración académica. Este espacio nació de conversaciones con estudiantes de secundaria y preparatoria respondiendo a la pregunta fundamental, ¿qué actividades te harían dejar tu celular? Los estudiantes dieron respuestas muy específicas y eso es lo que construimos”.

Los estudiantes de tercer y cuarto año de preparatoria tendrán la oportunidad de participar diariamente en materias electivas avanzadas nivel industrial en arte, música, periodismo de difusión, danza, yoga, codificación y artes culinarias en el R.E.C. después de clases, los estudiantes de 7º a 10º grado tendrán la oportunidad de asistir al R.E.C. para actividades organizadas por el personal y otros socios de la comunidad. “También habrá disponible consejería privada individual y grupal para los estudiantes que sean remitidos a dichos servicios, situando el espacio como uno que fomenta el desarrollo social y emocional de los estudiantes: un verdadero espacio seguro”, agregó la Dra. Norrell.

En el R.E.C. encontrarás:
• Salones de consejería privadas individuales y grupales
• Salones de arte 2D y 3D
• Estudio de producción musical
• Centro de deportes electrónicos
• Estudio de danza y yoga
• Estudio de grabación de noticias de televisión (los estudiantes podrán producir noticieros transmitidos en vivo desde aquí con equipo de cámara de nivel industrial, un escritorio noticiero y más)
• Estudio de podcasts
• Cocina de artes culinarias
• ¡Comedor/Café bar y más!

“Habrá talleres para padres y programas para familias con niños de todas las edades durante el fin de semana. Esto nos dará la oportunidad de aumentar la participación de los padres y al mismo tiempo unir a las familias en el viaje educativo”, dijo Mariza Martínez, subdirectora del Centro Educativo de Resiliencia. “¡Estamos agradecidos de que nuestros estudiantes y sus familias puedan ser parte de algo tan único e inspirador en nuestra propia comunidad de East Aurora!”
